since every country seems to have a different set of delivery scenarios, this is to monitor US deliveries: scheduled deliveries, delays, causes therefor, SNAFUs and, as importantly, ON-TIME deliveries (give 'em their due when they get it right).

probably a good idea to include configuration so that relevant back-orders can be ascertained and general 'apples/apples' comparisons can be made.

post away.

They've got the Dell Xps 17 (L702X) - Order Progress? Topic for this.

Either you're too lazy to only read the US posts or you're just begging for rep.

Problem with that thread is that other countries muddle the picture - from the limited response so far, it seems US laptops ship out in about a week, while a lot of the posters from the Order thread that are still waiting aren't in the US

Unmute system when headphones are plugged in?

When I upgraded my last laptop to Windows 7 I noticed that when I plugged my headphones in my system would unmute. If I checked the audio properties I'd see two bars, one for my system speakers that would remain muted, and another for the headphones that would be on. This doesn't happen with my new X201, and I was wondering if there was a way to get this back?

Please Advise: 1366x768 or 1600x900 on E6520?

I'm upgrading from a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a 1280x800 15.4 display to a Latitude E6520 with 15.6 display.

I'm having a bit of a hard time deciding on which res screen to buy: 1366x768 or 1600x900. I mostly surf the internet, read tons of text, build webpages in wordpress, and use MS office for school. I would like more screen real estate but not at a major cost to text readability in native resolution - in this light the 900P display seems like a decent compromise (1080P screen would make things uncomfortably small I think and I wouldn't like it and it's not an option anyway).

I'd love to see the panel in person but the closest laptop in terms of display would be the Macbook Pro's 1690x1050. Would this provide a decent approximation of the E6520's display?

Could someone point me to some screen shots comparing both resolutions on a 15.6 display?

So, 1368x766 or 1600x900? Please advise would be grateful for your help.

Reply 1 : Please Advise: 1366x768 or 1600x900 on E6520?

I would favor the 1600x900 on the 16:9 15.6" unless you've got a reason not to.

Reply 2 : Please Advise: 1366x768 or 1600x900 on E6520?

1600x900. Huge difference in screen quality (at least it is on the E6500/10).

Reply 3 : Please Advise: 1366x768 or 1600x900 on E6520?

I thought Dell always offered like higher nits on higher resolution screens.

Reply 4 : Please Advise: 1366x768 or 1600x900 on E6520?

I'm grappling with the same dilemma... I tried out a new MBP 15" last summer, and everything was much too small for me (I am basically a business user). I returned it.

Right now I use a laptop with a 1280x800 display, so that's what I'm used to - everything being big enough to see clearly.

I went to Staples to see what the resolution was on the consumer Inspirons, the 15.6" displays were all 1366x768, and the 17.3" displays were 1600x900.

In terms of brightness/clarity, the 17.3" with 1600x900 definitely looked better. But, because it's a bigger screen the size of icons & text on both screens looked the same (they were fine for me). I really need to compare two 15.6" Dell screens that each have one of the different resolutions.

I need to get over to the nearest Univ. bookstore that has a Dell store to find out what 1600x900 actually looks like on a Dell (BU carries the 6510), but just haven't gotten there yet. I hate to get the laptop and then be straining to do my everyday email, word processing and web browsing on it.

The higher the PPI the clearer / denser any image is on the screen. The size of that image is determined by software, interacting with the hardware. For working with text, especially, always go for the denser screen option.

AutoCAD 2011 on HP workstations

I am having an issue running AutoCAD 2011 LT on my 8740w with M7820 and have started a thread on the Autodesk forums. Someone with a 8540w (FX880M) is having the same issue. So i was hopoing to get feedback from everyone running AutoCAD 2011 (both FULL and LT).

Problem: Display Auto Track tooltip significantly degrades performance. The text box popup pauses all cursor movement for 0.5s-1s on my 8740w (other user reports 3s pause on 8540w).

My thread on Autodesk has been open for a few weeks, and this other user is the first to chime in as having the same issue. The fact that he has an HP with Nvidia graphics makes me wonder if it an HP issue. So please try this and report back.

1) Under Options>Auto Track Settings, toggle Display Auto Track tooltip

2) Open any drawing and make sure Osnap and Otrack are turned on. Start a line and move your cursor around.

3) Note whether you see a significant difference in performance with the tooltip on/off. In my case, when it is on, snapping and tracking causes a significant pause in movement while the text box tries to display information. Turning the tooltip off removes the text box and snapping and tracking go back to normal.

4) Report here with the following information:

AutoCAD version

GPU

CPU

Y/N (regarding problem described above)

Sounds like my general tooltip error (Dont have autocad) some apps lag if a tooltip is shown, for example if I run a movie and a tooltip is shown then it all lags heavyly. So think its a vista/win 7 problem or just bad drivers from Nvidia

Did the same if I play in window mode and a tooltip is shown then my game fps is cripled

Reply 8 : AutoCAD 2011 on HP workstations

At least part of the problem is Aero. Here are your options.

1) Most AutCAD versions allow you to to "Disable visual themes".

right-click AutoCAD icon>properties>compatibility

If you are unlucky like me, you will not be able to select this option (note how it is gray in the pic above). I think this has something to do with Windows 7 Pro64 due to replies I've received from other users on the Autodesk forums. But Autodesk doesn't seem to care to look into it. This leaves you with 2 other options.

2) Switch to Win7 Basic. This is pretty easy, my only problem with it is that I actually need Aero to be running to use one the multi-tasking programs I use in conjunction with AutoCAD.

3) You can also turn off the worst offending tool, Dynamic Input. There is a button to toggle this on/off.

This will help some, and allow you to keep Aero running which is nice for multitasking. But it will not help the Measuring tool, if you do that a lot, you really need to use option (2) above instead.

So I'm kind of stuck. Aero allows me run a small program that increases my productivity while building a model in an acoustics simulation program...(don't ask about exporting/importing 3d drawings...it only works in theory). This is how I use AutoCAD 75% of the time...pulling coordinates off drawings to build a 3d model in another program. Turning off Dynamic Input helps some, but I use the measure tool a lot too, which is still slow and jerky until I switch to Win7 Basic.

Reply 9 : AutoCAD 2011 on HP workstations

if you're using just the drawings, why are you not just importing them into 3ds max, and using that software?

just confused

HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP eating my color cartridges

Hi all

I have a HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP and Im having issues that it eats my color cartridges, HP doesnt have an answer to why (I have a theory that it is a bad design done on purpuse so they can make more money). All my copies, fax and printing are in black and white. I bought a color laserjet just in case I had to print in color. I print around 2500 pages per month and thats all that my black cartridge can give, but by the second month the machine is asking for color cartridges when not one copy in color was made. Then on that second month when it is asking for color cartridges if you want to print in color it doesnt, you have to insert new color cartridges.

Any body knows how to avoid this, I dont paying $80 for a black cartridges monthly, but the color ones run at $250.

Reply 1 : HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP eating my color cartridges

Are you sure that you got the right printer? At the office we use the lowest cost printer which is a black/white non-color laserjet and read http://www.ecoimaging.com/?Cat=154&newsid=406&CP=1 so we know to take the count from HP and divide that by 3.

http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.com/testdrive/article.php/10728_3742811_2 notes 2,200 pages on black and not so many for the color carts.

Nothing seems terribly wrong here. But I'd get my printing off this printer fast and back to BW LASER quick.
Bob

Reply 2 : HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP eating my color cartridges

I too have a problem with the cartridges on my CM1312. I can actually see the reduction in "pages left to print" decrease as time goes on even though I didn't print anything in color. At the present time my printer is asking for a Cyan cartridge so I can only print in black. But,,, when I use the copy function and copy in COLOR it prints excellent copies. There is something wrong with this picture..These cartridges are too darn expensive to believe that they are empty with such little printing. Would a printer firmware help??? Any suggestion would be appreciated as this is otherwise a good printer. Thanks

Reply 3 : HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP eating my color cartridges

After too many years of dealing with this the real answer is to never print unless you have to. Here's the cost I set per page for color printing -> ONE DOLLAR PER PAGE.

Some may slam that estimate but at the end of a few years it seems to hold up as we factor in machine and other costs.

This is why you really need to put the brakes on printing in color. And consider stodgy old BW laser printers.
bOb

Reply 4 : HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP eating my color cartridges

I don't buy it!!! The fact remains that I can print in color with the color copy function. So, there still must be color toner in the cartridges. It has to be a sensor or some other component in the printer giving the incorrect data..

Reply 5 : HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP eating my color cartridges

The ONE DOLLAR A PAGE?

Sorry but my reply was about costs and how to reduce costs. If you have a defective printer or one with a bug be sure to call its maker and report it. Better yet, return defective products as that really clogs up the jets.
Bob

Reply 6 : HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP eating my color cartridges

Hello,
I do have the same problem, and I either don't buy the fact that it is cost me only 1$ per page.
The fact is "it is not normal for a color printer, which is only printing in black that the color cartridges become empty".
Excuse my poor english, I only want to bring my experience with this printer !!!
I have read (in the user's manual) that you can ignore the fact that color cartridge are empty, and still continue to print in black.
From the printer menu, go to Properties, and chose Printing Preferences and then Color tab, Color options and bold the Manual option then click on Settings...
choose Black Only for Text, Graphics and Photograph.

Do iPod docking stations retain memory?

I've got a Technika SP-707 iPod docking station and wireless stereo speaker system. Before I put my new iPod on it, I just want to make sure that no data from previous iPods placed there (song lists, programs, etc.) can 'taint' my new iPod or load it with old data, if such a thing is possible.

I don't know how the technology works: is a docking station strictly a line-in speaker system or is there more to it like a data retention facility? Thanks for any help. J.

well...first tell me if you have an updated BIOS and VBIOS and also update your graphic drivers too latest if you haven't yet and see how that goes....we need a little more info to figure out the problem

Got it going...

Anyone who is having this problem there is a simple fix.

Copy and replace the crysis.exe file from the DVD to the bin32 folder on your HDD.

Not too sure why this worked, But it did.

I am running a newer version of the BIOS (cant remember which one) and the stock VBIOS. Video drivers are 11.2 from the ATI website.

Will I gain any performance from updating the Video BIOS?

Everything is working great, and really don't know what the benefits are of updating the VBIOS.

Cant wait for EA to release a patch for DX11 64 bit on this game.

Windows XP won't complete login screen

Hi, new here.
My computer goes thru the boot up to the Microsoft light blue/ med blue screen with the MS logo. At this point it is supposed to split the screen and list the users. I only have one user...me.

Today it stops right before the screen split. There is no place to 'click' so I'm stuck.

The comp has been running quite well and seemed healthy. I have had no real problems lately with it. It's not really new but it has been a good piece.

It didn't seem to be hot or smell burned. I blew it out with canned dry air. the video and motherboard chips have fans and they are clean and working. the case fans are working and there wasn't much dust in the case.

Reply 1 : Windows XP won't complete login screen

Try to start in "safe mode". ( do that by tapping F8 right after the BIOS splash screen ) If that is possible, then maybe some software changed the startup scheme or a hardware device has failed. Unplug any device external to the computer other than the keyboard and monitor. Then try normal startup again.

All of a sudden my CD ROM (Matshits DVD rom 8505 ATA) stopped running. It only plays audio CDs. When I insert a video DVD i get an error RUNDLL32 stopped working. I cannot install any programs from the drive as it does not read at all.

If you haven't already, download, install, update, then run a full system scan with the free malware removal tool from the link below. Delete anything it finds.:

Malwarebytes Antimalware

If that doesn't fix the issue, then we would swap in a new DVD drive.. They frequently simply quit working..

Hope this helps.

subject Two Thoughts.

I have tried both and failed. I swapped the CD /DVD drive with another laptop. It worked fine in the other laptop. The other CD/DVD drive had the same problem. Both computers are clean as a whistle as I am running driver updater, Advanced System care and fix cleaner.

Reply 3 : MY DVD rom reads only Audio files.

Frequently, registry cleaners/optimizers cause such problems.. In my opinion, then USUALLY cause more problems than they help.

That said, because it may be a registry issue, please follow the instructions in the link below and the "Fixit/Run Now" option listed there.:

Hope this helps.

Hi Grif,
Thanks a million for your continued effort.
I tried the cd/dvd fix and it did not work. Result = unrepaired.
I also tried the hardware fix there and came back as identified with a yellow exclamation mark. No fix applied.
We are back to square 1.
Any other suggestions>
Thanks

Reply 5 : MY DVD rom reads only Audio files.

If so, open Device Manager, then double click on the 'DVD/CD-Rom Drives" so it displays the specific device.. If the device is there, RIGHT click on it, choose 'Uninstall", then restart the computer. Upon restart, Windows should recognize the device again and install the correct drivers.

If that doesn't get it done, then try visiting the computer manufacturer's website and check for an updated motherboard/Chipset driver.. Install it if they have one.

Hope this helps.

Grif

Reply 6 : MY DVD rom reads only Audio files.

Been there, done that. No yellow exclamation!
I think it is the windows Vista service pack 2
I am doing to restore my comp to before that date and see.
I checked the internet at Matshita.com. There are many complaints about this CD drive. This website directs you to programs which charge 30-50 bucks. I signed up for 1 (Driver update.com) and still no use.
Microsoft also had a lot of complaints about this drive. Most of them related to Vista SP2.
Thanks for your help.
If you think of something else, please let me know.
Thanks & Regards.

dv7t quad edition - 1600x900 screen quality?

Anyone care to comment on the 1600x900 screen on the dv7t quad edition... Is it clear and bright, how are the viewing angles?

I suspect it's the same 200nit screen as found in my lowly G72. If I'm correct, you can view one at your local office superstore.

I am considering this because some of the sites I use have not been adjusted for ie9 and I can't use it on them. It is a matter of time but I find that Chrome has the same issues and I have to use firefox which is OK but takes for ever to load. ie8 worked with everything, apparently.

I, too, regretted installing IE9 and needed help to uninstall it.
In the uninstall programs box you will see "Tasks" in

Good luck!

8540p/w vs 8560p vs 4530s vs 6560b (need a 15in bizbook)

My dad is looking for a new 15 in laptop for forex/day trading activities during retirement (current machine = toshiba qosmio F25) - see wtb thread here.

We had decided on an 8540w we'd found for $832- but he decided that he did not want a high resolution screen, b/c of weak eyes and the fact that it will be hooked up to external monitors most of the time.

So- that opens up more options- but what to choose? We would like to keep the purchase at around $1000- but also want a 3 year warranty. We have been looking at i5s, but could we get away with an i3? not sure. We would much prefer to go with a sandybridge machine, for the sake of future-proofing- or perhaps that isn't important? However, my dad doesn't want to wait for prices to go down (weve already made him wait since december for the new machines to come out) and would "prefer" something that isn't outdated....but are the new models overpriced?

any thoughts/advice? How does the quality of the probooks compare to the elitebooks? (Im a total novice) thanks!

ps- are dedicated graphics a must for our purposes w/ sandybridge? what about w/o?

G53J Questions

Hello Everyone!

So, I just got the Asus G53Jw laptop (after my Alienware crashed) and absolutely love it so far.

But I do have a couple questions concerns, and am hoping someone here can help.

Question 1: I still have my hard drives from my Alienware, and am wondering if it's possible to add another HD to the Asus, so that it will have two HD's? Is it possible?

Concern 1: My backlit keyboard isn't lighting up anymore. I just updated the ATK driver, but it still doesn't work. My other function keys/options work... so I'm guessing it's a keyboard driver? I'm just not sure which one I need to update from the Asus website.

Thanks for all the help!

Hey Jeremy! Welcome to the forums!

For your first question, there is a second hard drive bay. It does require a hard drive caddy, which was unavailable for a while, but we do have some in stock. To install it, you can take a look at this handy little guide my service manager posted on our forums:

YouTube - ASUS G53JW 2nd Hard Drive Install by XOTIC PC

For the second question, about the backlit keyboard, I remember some of our forum members stating that when they tried to install the ATK drivers two or three times that it finally worked. It seems odd to me that it wouldn't work the first time you try installing them, but give it a shot, let me know how it goes.

If you're interested in ordering a second hard drive caddy, shoot me a PM or email me.

Thanks!

Reply 2 : G53J Questions

Thank you for your help! It worked. Had to install the update twice, but now I have it.

Thanks again!

Also, sent an email about the hard drive thing.

I see that the Asus eStore also has the G53JW caddy in stock (finally): Hard Drive Caddy

Oh awesome! Thank you very much for the link.

Anyone know if that caddy also works in the G51? (I've got a G53 but my son has a G51.)

Last question: does anyone know if either the G51 or G53 can take a 12.5mm drive?

USB

How do i know if my computer supports USB 2.0 or 3.0 or what

Reply 1 : USB

Unless you have a recent new purchase/build, you don't have USB 3.0. I suggest you google for PC Wizard 2010(maybe 2011) and d/l it. Run it and find the specs of your system. If you find, you have USB2.0, you can upgrade using some pci type card for USB3.0. You can also review your manual, its something they definitely want to point out.

tada -----Willy happy

Reply 2 : USB

http://images2.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/65091.jpg Extra conductors.

Unless your PC was made, say, last week, you don't have it. Like Willy says, desktop PCs can upgrade to a USB-3 controller card that will plug into a vacant PCI slot. I have one for my external SATA hard drive in a USB-3 enclosure.

The speed is noticeably faster.

You can use a USB-2 cable on a USB-3 device but without the extra conductors you only get USB-2 speed.

XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

I tried to power on the computer the other day and it would not boot. THe power button on the front of the case is blue, indicator lights 1, 3, and 4 stay on. The hard drive indicator is solid for about 5 seconds then turns off. The fans remain on high. Sometimes if I am lucky the monitor will turn on, but then will shut off. I have recently switched out mother boards to a refurbished Dell, switched out the memory and have disconnected and reconnected everything in the case. Please advise. Desperation is starting....

Thanks

Reply 1 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

Starting to track this down. I have pulled everything off the motherboard. With just the motherboard with power, CPU. All cards are out, all RAM is out, hard drive disconnected, front panel has power.

1) I am getting a blue power button on the front of the case, indicator light 1 only, the miniview on the case is displaying "No memory modules detected".

2) Added 1 gig of new Dell memory, not the same memory that came with the computer. Getting indicator lights 1, 2, and 3. Power button onfront of case is still blue. Miniview display shows "Card case fan failure"; "CPU fan Failure", "System Battery Voltage is low", and "No Display device found".

3) Connected what I now know are the CPU/Card case fans. Indicator lights 1, 2, and 3 are on, blue power button. Miniview displays "System battery voltage is low" and "No display device found". After the messages and indicator lights came up I heard two quick beeps. I also plugged this directly into a wall outlet and got the same results. The hard drive, dvd burner are not connected yet. network card, phone/fax, video card are not connected.

I am headed to the store to pick up a new battery CR2032.

Reply 2 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

I have an XPS 420 and all of a sudden it is doing the same thing. Won't start, fan running on high, and panel lights 1, 3, & 4 lit.

Curious if you've solved the problem. I haven't changed anything on this sytem in over a month.

Reply 3 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

holy crap mine just did this today as well! thank god dell has 24/7 support. i talked to a tech and theyre gonna try new memory and a new motherboard next week

i removed all the memory, vid card and hard drives which didnt seem to do anything. i got the numbers 1 3 4

glad i got 3 year warranty cause i just past the 2 year mark...tho i wouldnt mind getting a new computer either hehe

Reply 4 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

This was rediculously simple on my computer...I saw some postings about changing the CR2032 battery on the motherboard...as I was attempting to remove the old battery I heard it "click" into place.

I hit the power button and...voila...no more problem!

Reply 5 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

thx, ill mention that to the tech who will be here soon

Reply 6 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

Hi Svangogh,

Just wondering if since your post the problem remained resolved as I'm also encountering the same problem on an XPS 420 bought in 2007 and cant find a single definitive solution? Also by changing that battery mind if I ask, did it affect anything else, HDD or just reset system clock? Any insight would be greatly appreciated happy

Reply 7 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

new motherboard and memory did nothing. when the tech saw the lights (the same the i told the indian phone support) he said it was the video card or psu...

dell told me either get all new parts and hope it works, or if the parts arnt available (its a 2 year old system) get a replacement from a newer model. however that would take up to 3 weeks!!! i said look for the parts, i wasnt waiting 3 weeks...

i suggested giving me a $500 coupon towards a new system, they said no deal...

Reply 8 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

today they replaced the cpu, psu and gpu and it works now. the tech said he thought it was only the gpu tho. oh well, new parts in my computer now

Reply 9 : XPS 420 will not boot, fans on high

It does sound as though your CPU or Powersupply was faulty. Glad you are up and going.

ADSL Modem/Router with NAS

Hi

Does anyone know if there is an ADSL Modem/Router on the market that has a USB NAS port that allows full file mangement? (I don't know if anything like this even exists)

I currently have a wireless ADSL modem/router but want to be able to attach an external HD to it so that I can share files accross the wireless/wired network and be able to create folders move files around etc on the HD without having to disconnect it each time.

I know there are a couple of routers about that do this but ideally don't want seperate pieces of kit. Also (with my limited knowledge) I am under the impression that I went down that route I would have to buy a new modem that is not wireless, to link it to the router.

Can anyone help?

Reply 1 : ADSL Modem/Router with NAS

While we can add NAS to a LAN the idea of such as well as the DSL modem in the box would upset many as they lose the NAS when they move to Cable, Fiber or other.
Bob

Reply 2 : ADSL Modem/Router with NAS

Thanks for that so basically what I need to do is go down the route of seperate modem and router?

Do you know if it is possible to stop a wireless ADSL/Router to stop acting as a router? I could then link a seperate router to my current moden without having to buy both seperate pieces of kit.

Reply 3 : ADSL Modem/Router with NAS

Most cable, DSL, fiber providers are giving you the modem+router+wifi. Why not just add what you want to your LAN?

Why isn't separate pieces a good thing?
Bob

Reply 4 : ADSL Modem/Router with NAS

Its because I am sailing into waters that I don't really know or understand. I so know what I want to achieve but just not sure what I need to acheive it.

My current setup is an Xbox 360, 2 x laptops and a desktop (that I am using as a media centre) and has my external HD linked to (I eventually want to replace this with a wireless media player). All of this is working through a BT Voyager 2091 ADSL Router.

I can access the files on the external HD but it means I need to turn on the desktop to be able to share everything. That is why I am looking for some kind of NAS option on the router.

Do you have any suggestions? Could I link another wireless router to my ADSL router via a LAN cable?

Reply 5 : ADSL Modem/Router with NAS

I won't detail why it is so but no one I know of is happy with wifi NAS setups. We won't go there.

I have a simple NAS that was 25 bucks. It's the IOGEAR GMFPSU22W6 which I picked up a pair to use for a NAS. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=GMFPSU22W6&cat=PRN

Why would I not use such a thing?

Battery 10% plugged in not charging

I have a acer laptop running windows 7, the problem is my battery is staying exactly at 10% and says "plugged in not charging". When I unplug it, it goes into sleep mode so I know that it really is 10 percent and not a glitch. I have tried searching for a solution on Google and tried going to device manager and uninstalling Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method and then searching for hardware changes which re installed it, I also searched for updates but I had the most recent one. Anyone know what could be the problem here? I'm really hoping I don't need a new battery, it seems like a software problem.
Thanks

Reply 1 : Battery 10% plugged in not charging

Laptop batteries are usually 300 cycle, 18 month affairs. If it's not charging when windows is running, that's ONE THING. But if you shut down and without turning on the machine, it should charge. The circuits are designed that way and that's my test to see if there is any hard issue.
Bob

Reply 2 : Battery 10% plugged in not charging

300 Cycle? I'm not 100% sure when I got the battery but I'm pretty sure it was about a year or longer ago... and even with the computer turned off the battery stays at 10% never going higher or lower.

Samsung Home Theatre sound problem

I have a new Samsung Home Theatre Blue-Ray system, Model HT-C5500. Recently one or more of my surround sound speakers will cut out, sometimes one and sometimes another. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with whether I'm watching a recorded TV program, a DVD or live TV. After a couple of minutes, the sound comes back to normal. I discovered that if I turn up the volume, the sound pops back. Any ideas about what could cause this problem would be appreciated.

Administrative Access

I previously sent a discussion question for help regarding not being able to download, upgrade, or even install any programs due to the fact that I dont remember Admin Access password at all. I tried to download program to have access to Admin login in to reset password but with me not remembering password no download that I try to run will not completely install due to Admin Access keeps popping up. Is there such free program or whatever advice I can get regarding the removal of the Admin login.

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. Depending on your issue, we might need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, and any other information you think might be helpful. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

Reply 3 : Teach me how to format my computer .

It doesn't matter! A Format is a format, why make it anymore difficult than it is? Doesn't matter what Operating System, Ram, Hard Drive...ETC. If you're going to format, then you're going to scrub! Make sure you have your hardware drivers etc.....

Reply 4 : Teach me how to format my computer .

While reformatting your hard drive is pretty much generic, most assume 'reformatting' to also include the reinstallation of Windows to restore it to the 'factory state.' Because of that asking for more information is a standard procedure:

* Operating system is needed to provide exact instructions for reinstallation. (It does vary.)
* Whether or not it's a multi-boot needs to be considered. (Order of OS installation.)
* If it's a SATA hard drive special drivers may be needed. (And an extra step taken during installation.)

Also, we frequently ask about RAM to make sure they have enough to run the OS effectively. If the problem they're trying to cure in poor performance and they only have 64MB of RAM for Windows XP then we can save them the trouble of wiping their drive and starting over with the same problems.

Reply 5 : Teach me how to format my computer .

If I'm going to reformat a Windows 2000 or XP computer, which generally have an NTFS file system, I'll use the Windows CD to repartition and/or reformat the drive, then reinstall the the operating system... Everything from the CD with the CD-Rom set to boot first in the CMOS settings.

If I'm going to reformat a Windows 9.x or ME computer which generally use FAT32, I'll use a emergency boot floppy which contains Fdisk and Format, then boot from the floppy disk "without CD-rom support", then partition and format the disk using the floppy. Once that's done, I'll restart the computer using the bootdisk "with CD-Rom support", place the operating system CD in the drive and install the OS..

Completely different procedures using different disks, drives, etc.

Hope this helps.

You don't format a computer. You format a partition on a drive to make it empty.

So the 3 questions are:
1. What do you want to do with the disk when it's empty?
2. Is it the only partition on the only disk in your PC?
3. What tools do you have to format it (like a Windows XP CD from Microsoft, or a System Recovery CD from Gateway)?

Reply 9 : Teach me how to format my computer .

Depends on the installation disks you have. Could be, for example:
- no disk at all, then use the recovery partition
- XP disk + driver and utilities disk
- XP disk + several driver disks and diskettes
- system recovery disks
Without that information, we can't tell how to proceed.

If you can help me with my computer it is very slow because of a virus I can not remove. However, I have an antivirus(avist)I don not know if it is good enough. Please let me knowif you can help

Reply 11 : Teach me how to format my computer .

Hichamo,

Better make this a new thread, instead or continuing a not-very-much related one. Avast! (not avist) is good enough (as long as you renew your license every year to get the automatic updates), but it doesn't detect most spyware. There's other software (free also) for that purpose, like Ewido (only for Windows XP) and Spybot. Or an online scan by Housecall or panda or bitdefender.

If you say you've got a virus you can't remove, there must be a lot you know but don't tell. How do you know there's a virus, for example? And maybe: what virus?

There can be other reasons for a computer being slow. Like background programs running that aren't viruses or spyware, but legitimate stuff you installed yourself. A a very full hard disk. Or it is just slow on the internet, because you're on a dial-up connection. Or you haven't enough RAM for what you do with the machine

So in your new post (that starts a new thread) please tell:
- what "slow" means, and in what circumstances it is slow
- your OS
- if you've applied all security patches from windowsupdate
- if you've got a firewall running
- the amount of RAM in your machine
- the speed of the CPU
- the total and free disc space
- your policy for keeping your hard disk clean (without unnecessary files)
- if you can do a defrag (and why not)
- all you know about this supposed virus
- if your avast! is set for automatic update and licensed for it
- the results of scans with ewido (if you've got XP), Spybot S&D and online scan with housecall (use google to find it, or search on this forum for references)
- a list of all running processes (from Task manager in Windows XP that use more than 1% of the CPU time)
- a full list of alle entries in the Startup tab of MSCONFIG (Start>Run>MSCONFIG)

This will take some time to assemble, but it's all necessary information to get a picture of what could be wrong with your machine.
If you've got a socalled Restore disc, a good backup of all data you don't want to lose and the setup's and CD's of all application programs you installed, you can consider to do a clean install of the OS instead of trying to remove the 'virus' (if it is one, we've only got your - possibly not too informed - word for it at the moment).

Good luck,

Kees

If your computer is a brand name, such as HP or Compaq, then you probably have a Recovery Partition or Recovery CD from which you can reformat and reinstall the operating system and all software back to it's factory condition.. If you have a Dell, then you should have a Windows XP cd, a Resource CD, and possibly a variety of other software installation CD's.(We need to know which service pack is installed on your XP and which one is on the Recovery CD)

With Windows XP, it's not really difficult to perform the operation of repartitioning and reformatting but in order to go step by step, we'll need more information.

If you have a Windows XP CD from which to install the operating system, you generally can follow the instructions from the link below:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/sp2installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm

After XP is installed, then you'll need to install the various hardware drivers.. You should have a driver or Resource CD for that purpose. If you do not, you should look for those drivers now and make a CD with the driver installation files.

Hope this helps and let us know more.

To start with, that's an imprecise request. You don't format a computer, you format a partition on a disk (or diskette or zip-drive or USB-stick).

Second, did you read the earlier posts in this discussion? Please start with that. Start a new thread if you have any specific questions that aren't answered above. But be sure to provide all necessary details there that we need to answer them.

white spots on tv screen

I have a Samsung 50inch dlp projection tv model # HLS5086WXXAA
serial# B18E3CMLA06269Y Version # PBOT The set was one and a half yrs old when white spots started to show up on the screen, it started with one ,then two, now there are more than fourty and growing every day. They are about 1/8 inch round.I would think a $1600 tv should last more than one and a half yrs before I need to spend money to have it repaired. What causes this and how much will it cost to have it repaired. Can I get the part and fix it myself. Thank You for your help

Reply 1 : white spots on tv screen

mads16m37,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems with your set.

When you say "white spots", do you mean individual pixels? The DLP units have a micromirror device that, if they get stuck, could show small white pixels. Is this what you mean? I'm not sure what would cause a 1/8th inch round spot on the inside of a DLP television.

To have the unit repaired, you'd have to get an estimate from 800-SAMSUNG. I just don't have the pricing available to me. If you'd like to get the part yourself, it may be available on www.samsungparts.com or by calling our parts department at the above number. Without being able to diagnose the unit myself, I don't know which part would fix this issue.

they are individual pixels, they cover the whole screen, they are all about 1/8 inch round. It started with one, now there are about fourty, with two or three new ones every day. From another chat forum, I was told they will keep getting worse, wntil you can't see the picture, they said the problem is the DMD, do you know how much this part is, and is is easy to get to. Model #HLS5086WXXAA
Serial# B18E3CMLA06269Y Version PBOT 50 inch DLP PROJECTION.

Thank You Very much for your help, Mike

Reply 3 : white spots on tv screen

Mike,

The DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) is the actual chip itself. In this case, it contains roughly 921,600 micro-mirrors that make up the picture you see.

That chip, to the best of my knowledge, is actually part of the engine board. It can't be "snapped out" and replaced; however the board can be replaced, and in the process, you essentially get a new television on the inside.

The best thing you might want to do is call 800-SAMSUNG and explain the situation and see if they have a recommendation since the chip is getting worse. If not, that same phone number will get you to the parts department and you can inquire about the costs for a replacement board.

Keep me posted.

this was a total waste of time. I will NEVER buy another Samsung product. They sell junk and they do not stand behind their product. I am placing my tv with a 4x8 sign in front of my house for every one to see what kind of junk you sell and how you took my $1600 and this piece of junk did not last 1 1/2 years. Who ever is the head of Samsung they can shove this piece of **** up their ass.
A FORMER CUSTOMER, AND I WILL MAKE SURE EVERYONE I KNOW WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER sAMSUNG PRODUCT

it is obvious this is a defect. Keep your TV. Maybe Samsung will realize they made a big mistake and offer us some kind of deal on a fix.

I have the same exact problem on a similar age dlp. I am mad I told friends and family to buy Samsung products and that they will eventually get these white spots too.

Same problems happened to me starting last week. It started with two spots, I am up to 9 and many more are flashing. I called Samsung and the rep told me that the part costs $900.00 without labor. My TV is only two years old and out of warranty. Samsung refuses to acknowledge that it is a defect. Very frustrating

My 50 inch samsung projection tv started with the white spot at 18 months. They started with two, and kept growing until I could not see the picture any more. I contacted Samunng, and the bottom line was screw off, they did not want to know anything. I have been on a different number of technical chat lines and there are hundreds of people out there with the same problem, yet Samsung says this is the first they have heard of this problem. They are full of ****, they refuse to say there is a problem with this T V. THEY SUCK and I will never buy another Samsung product, and I will tell every one I know that Sansung sucks and they do not stand behind there products

I have the same problem! It started a few days ago....first two now there are 8! They are growing in numbers each night. Has anyone found out anything about this?

Reply 9 : white spots on tv screen

funny....I tried to look it up on the computer thinking " no way will i find anything" and low and behold......everybody has this problem!!! yet samsung and it's affiliates always seem surprised and don't know what it could be???? Mine started a few days ago looking like the little dipper.....then the big dipper.....and after reading....soon the milky way!!!!! come on samsung....fix your problem! yes, it seems mine also is between the warranty ending but less then 3 years. At least send us the part so we can have it fixed.

If your having white dots appear on your Samsung DLP TV make sure you call Samsung support at 1-800-726-7864 and tell them about it. I called yesterday and they are sending out a service guy to fix it. Samsung is covering the bill in full. I bought my TV back in Feb. 2007 and is out of warranty. I was relieved when the support person said there would be no charge as I'm sure it is not cheap to fix. It appears Samsung is repairing that generation of TV's. You will need your model and serial number when you call in.

Reply 11 : white spots on tv screen

Samsung is aware of the problem and is covering the costs of replacing the defect. It is the DLP chip, or something. The bad news there is a backorder on the chip, and no one at Samsun knows when it will be distributed. This company is a joke, and I will neverbuy another Samsung product again. They make a defective product and it will take at least 6 weeks to fix. Apparently the chip has been on backorder for one month, and they will not comment on when it will be available. This company does not deserve my business any longer, and I would strongly recommend anyone looking at a Samsun product to keep looking.

CHEAP. Why is it there are TV's out there from the 70's with the wooden panels on them that still work but my big screen 50inch flatscreen that should be a more advanced piece of technology didn't even last 2 years?? $1500 down the drain. I will buy never buy from samsung again. A Television should not last 2 years if it was built in 2007...have we not made any improvements? sure we have but the company is too cheap and tried to save a buck...well they lost customers and i will keep sending the company letters untill they fix this problem for free. I encourage you to as well, this is clearly a defect due to cheap labor and parts and should be their responsibility. Cheap ********.The white spots stared with 2 and each day theres like 4 more and its so irritating to watch TV with 25 spots through the picture.

Thanks to this forum and Samsung. Customer support was very responsive. Sent out tech who came when he said he would and replaced part AT NO COST.

My 50" DLP Model HLT5076SX/XAA developed white spots (100+) just after 1 year. Samsung said they do not have a white spot issue with my model TV and repair is not covered by their alert. Initially, Samsung told me they would repair my TV, but later reneged. I was quoted a repair cost of between $300 and $600. Samsung's unwillingness to repair these manufacturer's defects is very disappointing. I believe a class action law suit is warranted. I have purchased my last Samsung product. MY WARNING IS: BUYER BEWARE!!

Reply 15 : white spots on tv screen

I have a 56" HLT5676SX/XAA with the same problem. They sent me an email that it was covered but later reneged. This is definately an on-going problem with Samsung and they have failed the consumer. i will never, never buy another Samsung product. i will also tell everyone about their customer service and how bad it is...

I have had the same problem as about 30 others on this thread. I started with one white dot 2 yesterday and now I have 4! I have a 56" rear projection and it was not cheap. The fact that Samsung is not standing behind their product is ridiculous, especially when there is an overwhelming number of consumers having the same exact issue. I certainly don't have $900 to repair as Samsung has quoted or another $2K for another tv!!!!! Class action sounds good to me!

Reply 17 : white spots on tv screen

i have the same exact model and i've called samsung 3x in the last month. They've been telling me the 'six series', which is what we have, has yet to make the repair list...........for the exact same problem as all the other model samsungs on the repair list. Pretty pathetic huh? So, I told them I was going to call them every single day until they repaired it. The CS representative asked if she could note/quote me on that and I said "absolutely." I'll let everyone know if something changes by me harassing them about it.

Thanks for posting this! I have a Samsung 42 inch DLP TV purchased 12/19/06 & noticed a white dot yesterday. After Googling it I found the posts on this site & was ready to buy another TV as this one is way out of warranty. This is a known issue & my TV qualified to get repaired at no cost. A tech will be calling me in a day to set up a repair. The only hitch was that if this fix (new DMD chip) doesn't fix the issue then I would be responsible for a "trip charge". The phone rep said that the tech should advise me up front what this charge could be & then I decide then if I want them to come out or not. I see you posted this in January 2010. How is the TV now? White spots gone?

Thanks to this forum and Samsung my Tv has been repaird at no cost. After getting a call tag from Samsung who assured me there would be no cost the repair place tried to tell me there would be a service call charge but the repair was covered. After informing him that Samsung said there would be NO COST to me, he concluded that there would be no charge. Customer support was terrific and when I mentioned this site, they immediately gave me a call tag to have it fixed. Thank YOU!!

VERY disappointed. I have the exact same issue and am getting no HELP! 1700.00 down the toilet. I think I'll put a sign in my front yard too!!!

Reply 23 : white spots on tv screen

I have the same thing happening to the TV. It started with one, now it's all over the screen. This started last year, and it's getting worse. The TV is barely 3 yrs old. I will never buy another Samsung, and will spread the word about this brand to anyone who wants to listen.

Reply 24 : white spots on tv screen

As read about in many previous posts, my husband and I are experiencing the same issue with our Samsung. We heeded previously written advice and called Samsung regarding the malfunction. Samsung told us that our television is not on the recall list for this problem, but it is the DMD chip and that the would have a service representative contact us within the next 24 hours. With our television, the issue began not quite a week ago. There were about 5 pixels that appeared as a faint blue or white dot. Within days, it covered our entire screen, making the television unable to be used. The dots are also surrounded by a grey or blackened haze. It is ridiculous that Samsung will manufacture a product, several models all having the same issue, yet whomever does their recall list picks and chooses the ones that are available for recall. It is not as though my family has $1800.00 extra to replace this television.

With reading all of the complaints I have read here, along with the phone call that my husband and I made personally, I have decided to report the issue to the BBB. If anyone else would like to do the same, You will be reporting it to:

Is that where the corporate office is or just where they are registered? Because I am in Texas.

Reply 27 : white spots on tv screen

When I typed in Samsung, the only one in the USA that takes care of electronics and such was in Illinois. I just got off the phone with Samsung again... This time, they called me regarding my BBB complaint and my warranty now has a one time extension. They are contacting a service center and my television is going to be fixed with no expense out of MY pocket!!!

My 61" DLP started showing white spots within a month of the warranty expiring. I called as everyone on this forum has done and found out the same - my model is not on the "LIST". Pretty much I spent almost $3000.00 for a piece of hulking junk. It basically cost me a grand a year to watch TV. This was an investment for my family, I told Samsung this but all they could tell me was they were sorry. For anyone looking to buy a TV- AVOID Samsung TV's. Samsung doesn't even make DLP's any longer due to the issues and problems. I encourage everyone to make a complaint to the BBB regarding the issues and the lack of assistance and repair service. I read that some were writing in that Samsung was reparing the problems, I don't believe this. If I could I would throw this tv through the window of the Samsung President.

Reply 29 : white spots on tv screen

I am now up to 32 dots on my screen and still no respect from Samsung. I believe all of the blogs about peoples television experiencing the same issue as mine (WHITE SPOTS) are put up here falsely to make it seem like Samsung is fixing the problem free of charge. I have called in numerous time's to the point where they will not transfer me to Executive Relations anymore or a manager. They tell me one is not available or they can not transfer to that department because I already spoke with someone there. Which on the first call made to Samsung and finally transferred to Executive Relations I was told to call back to see if my T.V. made it on the list of faulty equipment although I am experiencing the same issue as the "satisfied customers" which has gotten their television fixed by "Samsung's brilliant customer service" Do not believe the hype people, Samsung is not a company that cares about manufacturing faulty equipment or taking care of them if it is......

Will this buid work??? IM A N00b!

Ok so this is what i have came up with so far..... The only thing i have bought at this point is the Case... So please let me know what you think... Will this work what else might i need etc. all opinions are welcomed. I know ive left optical drives and HDD out but i can figure that out on my own. What i need to know is will these components work together? Can i only run the one GPU to start with? and what heatsinks or liquid cooling might i need? And just anything else i Might need to know.

BIOS settings for ASUS mobo

I just purchased the Asus P7P55D-E LX motherboard with an intel i5-760 and an intel 40gb ssd. After assembling the parts and booting up it, it ran just fine off the default bios and installed windows 7 just fine. My problem is that in the BIOS it says that I do not have any SATA devices attached. However, after booting up from the POST screen (as well as the device list in Windows) it says that it recognizes the drive (drivers are full up to date) but is only operating at 3 gb/s, which somewhat defeats the purpose of getting an ssd.
I'm new to assembling my own pc and adjusting the BIOS. Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to boost the transfer rate to 6 gb/s? Here's a comprehensive list of my current setup:

Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D-E LX
Processor: Intel i5-760
Hard Drive: Intel Solid State 40gb
Disc Drive: HP dvd1040
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-750TX
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance (2 X 4GB)
OS: Windows OEM 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Any other tips to boost my performance would be greatly appreciated as the focus for my pc is for audio/video editing.

The left two ( upper and lower ) SATA channels labeled SATA_6G_1 and SATA_6G_2 are the 6GB channels. However, depending on the model number SSD, two different Intel SSD's listed this: Interface: Compatible with SATA 1.5 Gb/s and 3 Gb/s
So, check the specs on the SSD.
