Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. Depending on your issue, we might need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, and any other information you think might be helpful. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

Let us know more.

It doesn't matter! A Format is a format, why make it anymore difficult than it is? Doesn't matter what Operating System, Ram, Hard Drive...ETC. If you're going to format, then you're going to scrub! Make sure you have your hardware drivers etc.....

While reformatting your hard drive is pretty much generic, most assume 'reformatting' to also include the reinstallation of Windows to restore it to the 'factory state.' Because of that asking for more information is a standard procedure:

* Operating system is needed to provide exact instructions for reinstallation. (It does vary.)
* Whether or not it's a multi-boot needs to be considered. (Order of OS installation.)
* If it's a SATA hard drive special drivers may be needed. (And an extra step taken during installation.)

Also, we frequently ask about RAM to make sure they have enough to run the OS effectively. If the problem they're trying to cure in poor performance and they only have 64MB of RAM for Windows XP then we can save them the trouble of wiping their drive and starting over with the same problems.

If I'm going to reformat a Windows 2000 or XP computer, which generally have an NTFS file system, I'll use the Windows CD to repartition and/or reformat the drive, then reinstall the the operating system... Everything from the CD with the CD-Rom set to boot first in the CMOS settings.

If I'm going to reformat a Windows 9.x or ME computer which generally use FAT32, I'll use a emergency boot floppy which contains Fdisk and Format, then boot from the floppy disk "without CD-rom support", then partition and format the disk using the floppy. Once that's done, I'll restart the computer using the bootdisk "with CD-Rom support", place the operating system CD in the drive and install the OS..

Completely different procedures using different disks, drives, etc.

Hope this helps.

in my computer processer dual core 2.3ghz
160gb ddr

You don't format a computer. You format a partition on a drive to make it empty.

So the 3 questions are:
1. What do you want to do with the disk when it's empty?
2. Is it the only partition on the only disk in your PC?
3. What tools do you have to format it (like a Windows XP CD from Microsoft, or a System Recovery CD from Gateway)?

I want to format my computer, window xp because its too slow, my mouse is not moving rightly. What do I do?

Reply 9 : Teach me how to format my computer .

Depends on the installation disks you have. Could be, for example:
- no disk at all, then use the recovery partition
- XP disk + driver and utilities disk
- XP disk + several driver disks and diskettes
- system recovery disks
Without that information, we can't tell how to proceed.

If you can help me with my computer it is very slow because of a virus I can not remove. However, I have an antivirus(avist)I don not know if it is good enough. Please let me knowif you can help

Hichamo,

Better make this a new thread, instead or continuing a not-very-much related one. Avast! (not avist) is good enough (as long as you renew your license every year to get the automatic updates), but it doesn't detect most spyware. There's other software (free also) for that purpose, like Ewido (only for Windows XP) and Spybot. Or an online scan by Housecall or panda or bitdefender.

If you say you've got a virus you can't remove, there must be a lot you know but don't tell. How do you know there's a virus, for example? And maybe: what virus?

There can be other reasons for a computer being slow. Like background programs running that aren't viruses or spyware, but legitimate stuff you installed yourself. A a very full hard disk. Or it is just slow on the internet, because you're on a dial-up connection. Or you haven't enough RAM for what you do with the machine

So in your new post (that starts a new thread) please tell:
- what "slow" means, and in what circumstances it is slow
- your OS
- if you've applied all security patches from windowsupdate
- if you've got a firewall running
- the amount of RAM in your machine
- the speed of the CPU
- the total and free disc space
- your policy for keeping your hard disk clean (without unnecessary files)
- if you can do a defrag (and why not)
- all you know about this supposed virus
- if your avast! is set for automatic update and licensed for it
- the results of scans with ewido (if you've got XP), Spybot S&D and online scan with housecall (use google to find it, or search on this forum for references)
- a list of all running processes (from Task manager in Windows XP that use more than 1% of the CPU time)
- a full list of alle entries in the Startup tab of MSCONFIG (Start>Run>MSCONFIG)

This will take some time to assemble, but it's all necessary information to get a picture of what could be wrong with your machine.
If you've got a socalled Restore disc, a good backup of all data you don't want to lose and the setup's and CD's of all application programs you installed, you can consider to do a clean install of the OS instead of trying to remove the 'virus' (if it is one, we've only got your - possibly not too informed - word for it at the moment).

Good luck,

Kees

If your computer is a brand name, such as HP or Compaq, then you probably have a Recovery Partition or Recovery CD from which you can reformat and reinstall the operating system and all software back to it's factory condition.. If you have a Dell, then you should have a Windows XP cd, a Resource CD, and possibly a variety of other software installation CD's.(We need to know which service pack is installed on your XP and which one is on the Recovery CD)

With Windows XP, it's not really difficult to perform the operation of repartitioning and reformatting but in order to go step by step, we'll need more information.

If you have a Windows XP CD from which to install the operating system, you generally can follow the instructions from the link below:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/sp2installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm

After XP is installed, then you'll need to install the various hardware drivers.. You should have a driver or Resource CD for that purpose. If you do not, you should look for those drivers now and make a CD with the driver installation files.

Hope this helps and let us know more.

To start with, that's an imprecise request. You don't format a computer, you format a partition on a disk (or diskette or zip-drive or USB-stick).

Second, did you read the earlier posts in this discussion? Please start with that. Start a new thread if you have any specific questions that aren't answered above. But be sure to provide all necessary details there that we need to answer them.

Some of those responses ask for specific details about your computer.. (Unfortunately, you've given us NO INFORMATION about your particular machine and the type of discs, or equipment you have to reinstall the operating system with.) Other responses give you instructions for formatting your computer. Try those responses first.

Hope this helps.
