How to replace my wireless G with a new Wireless N

I have two computers which have been networked for internet access for the last 5 years. The wireless router is a Lynksys G, which has started to become problematic. One computer is an XP PC, which is using the wireless adaptor, and the PC hardwired to the router is a Vista OS.

I was not sure if the router or the modem was causing our problems accessing the internet, but the DSL people checked and said it did not show problems.

Today went to Radio Shack and bought a Netgear N router (which the sales clerk said WOULD be compatiable with the G adaptor). Since the XP is actually using WINDOWS to run the wireless, because the lynksys software began causing problems) but the Lynksys monitor remains in the system tray (disabled).

My question is, first, do I have to remove the lynksys monitor software from the XP computer, (and how do I do that?) or will the Netgear N software simply overwrite it? Should I even install the Netgear software, or simply continue to use the Windows network?

Any help is appreciated.

If it worked before with it there, then you don't have to. You can just use Windows. If you want to remove it, however, try Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and see if the Linksys Wireless in there. Click and select remove/uninstall.

You shouldn't really have to install any new software. Plugin/setup the Netgear, make sure it's broadcasting on "G", and then browse for a new wireless network on both PC's and connect to it.

Don't forget to encrypt your connection with something like WPA2, which if you follow the wizard, it will most likely setup for you.

..There's no need to install any software as long as the Windows wireless icon displays in the lower right corner.. You might also be able to uninstall the Lynksys software after you confirm that your connection is made using the standard Windows icon. If you need to remove the Lynksys software, it should be in the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section.

Hope this helps.
