MS net framework 2.0

I'm using XP home sp3 OS on a Compaq Presario SR1617 cl , I recovered during startup to start fresh after putting in WD 500 HD as a slave using my Samsung 160 HD as the master. I have upgraded from a sempron AMD processor to an Athlon 64, also increased memory to 4 bars of 1Gig DDR and upgraded to 400 W power supply, I hope this is enough information. After doing recovery there were many updates to MS Windows after what seemed like hundreds of updates, update (KB975025) was unable to install. Which started me on an unfruitful pursuit, I ended up going to ADD/REMOVE and removed Microsoft:net framework 2.0 which started even worse problems. Tried to reinstall many times could not. Installed framework 4.0 why? I don't know. I <span id="INSERTION_MARKER">have catalyst control center which used to open with start up but now a window come up CCC needs framework 2.0 to open, which I don't have. I went futher searching and found an artical which said if I was having a problem downloading framework 2.0 download sp3.5 and that would fix it. Well it wound not down load I tell you I sure have things messed up can any one help? I thought I would start recovery again and said let me try CNET forum first. HELP!!!!

If all those prior .NET KB discussions fail you, install .NET 2.0 so the ATI Catalyst works then ignore that update.

As to the "won't download" the internet goes down and back up so try downloading with IE then Firefox and hope you can go get it.

I have tried a few times installing Framework NET 2.0 I get a (X ERROR 25015 because system error :0x80131107) each time I try. This continues to happen with all the other suggestions I have tried with different error numbers for each, yet I will try even if I have tried once I'll try again.. Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated and tried, as I did retry this installation before your suggestion and even after 2x's. Thanks friend

When I replied I thought you could not download the workarounds. For example, http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/netfxbcl/thread/e40d80ca-6fe7-403d-b576-d6d72ef5e349/

This area is now well discussed so let's try that discussion for ideas.

IF YOU CAN'T DOWNLOAD THINGS, try another browser or even another machine.

I went to,http//social.msdn.mirosoft....and used the cleanup tool and then installed NET2.0, this worked great thanks. I have not tried update (KB975025) if it does not install I will ignore, is there a way to keep the update from showing up over and over? Thanks again !!!

The update installs fine. The reason for this mess is discussed so I'd let it install soon.

You can easily hide troublesome Windows updates that keep trying to download but will not install. Go to Windows Update and choose the 'Custom' rather than 'Express' option. Now, when the update appears you can click a 'Hide this update' (or words to that effect) button below the download information. You will get warnings and an icon will appear in your notification area while you have any Windows updates hidden. You can edit your Windows Update defaults to remove the icon if you find it and its related balloon a nuisance.

However, probably a better option is to download and run the free utility the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool which can be downloaded from http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx. Unzip and run this program to remove .NET Framework files from your system - you can choose any or all. Restart your system and then download and install the required .NET Framework versions from the Microsoft Download Center at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads where you can navigate to each required download. I advise temporarily turning off Automatic Windows Update first so no updates come through until you complete. You may be asked to restart your system between downloads - when you have all your .NET Framework versions you will need to run Windows Update. I suggest you use the 'Custom' option once more so that you can make the previously troublesome update unhidden. If all goes well, after the updates complete, you will no longer find you get repeated requests to install that troublesome update. Check by running Windows Update once more and, if the process has worked, it will find you need no updates. If this is the case, it is probably wise to turn automatic updating back on.

Hope this helps. It takes a little time but it worked for me.

Have used cleanup tool which removed all Net. framework and then installed Net 2.0 sp2 which led to other updates including net 3.0 sp2 and net 3.5 sp1. But still update (KB975025) downloads but fails to install, windows update says this is a critical update. I tell you this was my original problem and just grew as I tried different things, now my only issue is this update (KB975025) not installing. I have tried to find out if it a necessary update, if it is not I'll use hide this update. Thank you for your help and concern. So much time has been used to address this problem and still it will not instal, wow this is how I learn, WHAT I'm not sure, LOL thanks again

As far as I can tell, KB975025 is not actually a .NET Framework update but it is an important security update if you use certain types of applications. It appears that it relates to Windows Media Runtime and audio compression management. There's information about this at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS09-051.mspx . It may be beneficial for you to seek help from Microsoft as this is a security issue relating to a supported operating system and thus entitles you to free support. The following has been copied and pasted from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=975025 and may be useful for you:

"How to obtain help and support for this security update For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary for support issues with security updates, visit the Microsoft International Support Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=4 (http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=4) "

I hope you get this resolved, I know how frustrating and worrying such problems can be.

I see a lot of folk spend inordinate amounts of time on this one. Let's get one thing cleared up. If you don't have apps the need it, uninstall the .Net versions you don't need. For example, for today I only have a few .net 2.0 and 3.5 apps. I'd skip 1.0 and 3.0 for now. .Net 4.0 is a tossup. I know about it, have the dev kit and more but am not targeting 4.0 for now.

Hey download must have installed. Shut down computer and turned it back on 5 minutes later gave it plenty of time and there is no shield in task bar. Hope this has solved the update fail to install problem. Thanks again for all the help, may God bless ya both
