Your problem description "Volume just stops" could apply to a disk volume or audio volume. If it was audio volume it could be the volume control stops working or there is no audio output.
Since this is XP it could be as simple as some cleanup of temp files (I use CCLEANER) or it could be worse. But I'd refine the problem description a bit more.

Thanks Bob, got CCLEANER in, have had for years and keep my 'puter as clean as i know how, defrag, registry etc.
Audio volume,(not disk, as far as i know) no music, movie soundtrack etc.tower is about 8 years old, so i guess i'm lucky, eh? Have never run into this before. Thanks again J

Thanks again Bob, i will try that...as long as i can KEEP doing system restore, not a problem, unless that doesn't get it one day! Anybody out there with similar symptoms??

It was a person accepting a Windows Update for a driver.

Should not be a problem but look in the EVENT VIEWER to see if there are more clues.
